Build relationships with your customers

I learned that podcasting was a brilliant way to build relationships with a market that I knew nothing about... It's a brilliant tactic for B2B companies to build relationships with the exact people that they can do business with.
–  James Carbary, Founder of Sweet Fish

How you can get started with content-based networking today

  1. Add value first.
Don't wait. Go to the people you want to network with and add value. Make them famous. Shine the spotlight on them, not you!
  2. Learn out loud.
Don't be afraid to share what you're learning. You don't have to be an expert in everything. It actually makes you more relatable to show what you're learning.
  3. Live in-market.
Instead of showing up when you're ready to sell something, live in the market. Start conversations, engage in back-and-forths, and become known for the value you give.
  4. Market together.
Build relationships as you build content. Instead of thinking about content as a solo sport, think about how you can involve other people. If you're able, even involve other brands.
  5. Don't be afraid to get personal.
Sure, we're a part of the business world but it's important to create real, human connections. Make it a priority to get to know the people in your ecosystem - call, text, ask about their family, share a story, and connect on a human level.

Market musings

How can we, as marketers, tell others how to use a product unless we're truly experts on the product itself?

The truth is, we can't!

We aren't the experts. We are experts at crafting stories and narratives.

To tell great stories about our products and services, we need to live in the market.

We need to reach out to those who've been to the places our customers want to go.

James Carbary outlined a path for us to follow to create meaningful content for the long game. By creating relationships and content with experts who've been to where our customers want to go, we create an authentic narrative that drives results.
