What's an ecosystem anyway?
We talk about them all the time, but what are partner or business ecosystems?
Sure, there's always the risk of falling into overused buzzword territory. But it's actually a pretty rich word that helps paint a picture of how powerful, complex, and interdependent modern business is.
Let’s start where the term comes from. Ecology. Natural ecosystems.
An Ecosystem or ecological system consists of all the organisms and the physical environment with which they interact. These biotic and abiotic components are linked together through nutrient cycles and energy flows.
Where there are “ecosystems” in B2B, they should follow similar principles.
Ecosystems are everywhere, and sometimes it's hard to tell where one ends and another starts. But if you focus on where one is centered, rather than where it blends into another, you will find distinct features that tie it together.
By their very nature (pun intended), they are inseparable from life. Where life is, it exists in an ecosystem. There is no growth outside of an ecosystem.
Perhaps paradoxically, the more complex, the more stable. And the more stable, the more they thrive.
A Business Ecosystem consists of all networked people and the commerce and professional interests they share, as well as the platforms and environments in which they share them.
Business Ecosystems are comprised of Partners (companies with a shared commercial interest) and Communities (individuals with related professional interests).
Some components are biotic - living, growing people and groups of people - while others are abiotic - technology, physical spaces, even words and content. Both make up the way an ecosystem works. Both can help or hinder the organisms within.
